The History of Tarot: A Divination Through Time

The Beginning: All About the Benjamins (or ducats, in this case)



While we might associate tarot cards with spiritual divination, their roots are decidedly more mundane. Born in the mid-15th century in Europe, these beautifully ornate cards were initially a plaything of the wealthy. Italian nobles enjoyed using them in a game known as 'tarocchi'. Not quite the spiritual journey we think of today, eh?



These early tarot decks consisted of four suits with cards numbered one through 10, along with court cards - a king, queen, knight, and page. In addition, there was a fifth suit, which contained 21 illustrated cards - this would eventually evolve into what we now know as the Major Arcana.



An Unexpected Twist: The Spiritual Awakening



Fast forward to the 18th century, and tarot took a sharp turn off the game table and into the world of mysticism and divination. A French clergyman named Antoine Court de Gébelin was the spark that lit this spiritual flame.



According to his writings, de Gébelin believed that the tarot was much more than a simple card game. He insisted the symbols in the cards were in fact the hidden remnants of the Book of Thoth, a tome of ancient Egyptian wisdom. Now, whether he found this insight at the bottom of a wine bottle or through divine revelation, we may never know. But his assertion set the stage for a tarot transformation.



The Creators of the Modern Tarot: Arthur Edward Waite and Pamela Colman Smith



Allow us to tip our metaphysical hats to two significant figures who greatly influenced the tarot as we know it today - Arthur Edward Waite and Pamela Colman Smith. This dynamic duo, a mystic scholar and a gifted artist, joined forces in the early 20th century to create what's arguably the most well-known tarot deck in the world, the Rider-Waite Tarot.



Arthur Edward Waite, a scholarly mystic, was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn - a society dedicated to the study of the occult and metaphysics. Waite was less interested in fortune telling and more focused on tarot as a tool for personal insight and spiritual growth. With his mystical know-how, Waite conceived the themes and interpretations for a new tarot deck that would be less cryptic and more accessible to the everyday Joe or Jane.



But what's a visionary with an idea if not for an artist to bring it to life? Enter stage right, Pamela Colman Smith, affectionately known as Pixie. Smith, also a member of the Golden Dawn, was an artist with a knack for spiritual and symbolic imagery. It was under Waite's guidance that Smith brought to life the 78-card deck, embedding each card with symbolic details that added depth to their meaning. Smith's vivid and intricate illustrations are often credited with making the Rider-Waite deck so intuitive and user-friendly.



Their collaboration gave birth to a tarot deck that was groundbreaking at the time. Waite and Smith's deck was the first to include detailed pictorial scenes on the minor arcana cards, not just the major ones. These added illustrations made the cards easier to interpret, helping to make tarot more popular and accessible.



Tarot Today: Art, Intuition, and a Dash of Magic



Fast forward to today and tarot has become a tool for introspection, spiritual guidance, and, for some, a form of therapy. Modern tarot decks, like the well-known Rider-Waite deck, have evolved to contain rich, symbolic imagery that can be interpreted in a myriad of ways. Tarot has moved from being a pastime of the elite to a tool of empowerment and self-discovery for anyone willing to shuffle the deck.
